The Surat Basin is the world-focus of UCG development with three projects currently underway in the region. Liberty has lodged three Mineral Development License applications (MDLa’s) in the region and holds a number of Exploration Permits for Coal (EPC’s).
The Company completed 8 holes (1, 482 meters) of open hole air drilling in the South Surat as part of the first phase of its planned 2010 Exploration Programme.
Carbonaceous material was identified in a number of the holes and minor fragments of coal recorded. Data being collated from the first phase of the drilling programme is being utilised to further refine drill targeting.
The Company is planning deeper drilling to intersect the known Jurassic age Walloon Formation to test for possible resources within non-overlapped licence areas. Liberty believes there is significant potential to the north of the recently drilled areas which will be tested as the tenement applications over these areas become granted.
Geology
The Jurassic age Surat Basin unconformably overlies the older Permian Bowen Basin. The main coal measures in the regions are the Walloon coal measures which have been confirmed to be over 400 metres thick and contain multiple lenticular seams up to 4 metres in individual thickness. These measures are considered highly volatile coals, which are suitable for power generation and feedstock for the production of liquid fuels.
